Ballindine & Irishtown are in the parish of Kilvine.
The earliest consecrated grounds in the parish are believed to be
those of Kilvine.
Local folklore tells us that a relative of St. Patrick (some say a
sister) came to Kilvine and built
a church there in the time of St. Patrick. Her name was Mine.
She is buried in the church grounds at Kilvine, we are told.
It is said that a church stood on that same spot down through the
ages until
this last one fell into ruins.
Subsequently a medieval church was built here and these are the ruins
still visible today.
Cill is the Irish for a church and Cill Mhiáin means the church
of Mine.
We now have two churches in the parish: Irishtown and Ballindine.
Folklore also tells us that Cromwell attacked the three churches
of Cloonmore,
Garryduff and Kilvine on the one day.
